The cultivation of coffee in Burundi began in the 1930’s, though it has only been in the past two decades that specialty coffee status has truly been embraced. This coffee comes from the Ubwizabwikawa (meaning the beauty of coffee) Co-Operative in the Kayanza region. One of the Co-Ops Pillars which resonate with us is “Direct access to market, increasing the revenue of farmers to improve their livelihood”. Later in 2012 the Co-Op joined likeminded groups in the region to form a Union which has Fair Trade Certification. Collectively the Union has 1,800 members, 630 of them are women.

Reuben Hills was established in 2012 as a boutique micro roastery based in Surry Hills NSW. They travel to coffee producing countries around the world meeting farmers, cupping their coffees and selecting beans to showcase to Australian customers. 

As a small business, they pride themselves on supporting coffee producers, ensuring a more sustainable income and lifestyle for their families and communities. They favour price transparency and accountability and believe that in doing so, they are helping ensure the sustainability of the industry as a whole.
